Therapy or Coaching, What's the Difference?
"Do I need a therapist, or do I need a coach?" It's a common question.
Typically, therapy is for when you're feeling down or anxious for an extended period of time, beyond the normal ups and downs of living.
Coaching is for when there are no major life stressors that would impede you from achieving your goals.
Unsure Whether to Choose Therapy or Coaching?
Here's a quick comparison to help clarify:
- A therapist helps you resolve past issues or behavioral patterns that prevent you from moving forward. Typically, you seek out therapy when life's challenges are causing you a significant amount of stress.
- A coach focuses on your desired future and helps you create a plan to get there. They partner with you to create actionable strategies and hold you accountable. Coaching is more directive and didactic and is typically not focused on exploring emotions.
- Consider a therapist when you're feeling stuck or overwhelmed. If emotions are making daily life difficult, therapy may be the right first step.
- Consider a coach when you're free of any major issues that would prevent you from reaching your goals.
